Understand cron expressions without memorizing the syntax

Cron still powers backups, reports, and cleanup jobs. One off-by-one field can mean “every minute” instead of “once a day” — expensive either way.

Read the expression aloud

Paste a schedule into the Cron Explainer and confirm it matches the intent (daily at 03:00, weekdays only, every 15 minutes, and so on).

Mind time zones

Servers often run in UTC while your team thinks in local time. Pair cron checks with Unix Timestamp Converter when debugging “why did this fire at 2 a.m.?”

Document next to the job

Leave a one-line human description in config comments. Future you will thank present you when an on-call alert fires.
